Horrors of Halloween

Posted in Goth Culture with tags , , on November 2, 2009 by Heidi

Hope everyone had a Halloween to remember.    I had a record number of kids trick or treating this year!  Somehow, the rush of Halloween has become mainstream.  Teen girls want to be vampyres, and the new trend is the zombie craze with twixters buzzing about surviving zombie attacks.

It was not normal to like the dark side of life, but now it’s cool.  I keep thinking this may be a good trend; people may not expect me to smile all the time now.  Our culture has produced a love for the darkness because we don’t know what lies ahead for us or our country.  Take a walk down the history of horror films and you’ll see the vampire exposing the sexual revolution in the 1930s and 1970s.  Giant spiders and blobs of radioactive slime caused screams in the 195os flicks.  We are loving the demons that we fear.

Surviving a zombie attack may be gone and done in a year, but many in the horror industry wonder what’s next.  How will we emerge in the year 2010 in our nightmarish reality of our life?  I’m on it!

Horror and Hockey Masks

Posted in Goth Misc. on October 7, 2009 by Heidi

I’ve been out of commission and not able to decorate my house yet.  Our halloween candy selection is still dismal and I haven’t started my horror movie marathon yet.

My time is spent between horror and hockey.  Recently there have been some horrific injuries the opening week in the NHL as well as some blood flying onto the ice.

Hockey refernces in horror films are classically Jason from Friday the 13th, and you can buy that mask for $5 dollars at any local Halloween store.  What a classic way to say gore than hockey.

I’m Melting

Posted in Goth Misc. with tags , on July 11, 2009 by Heidi

Apologies for the delay, but I went on a voyage back to the 1600s.  Not what it sounds.  Went to New York, and I must say I am very impressed with the old town cemeteries.  Each small town displayed Jesus everywhere.  You’d expect a weather-proof Jesus  outside of an Italian restaurant or a Mexican grocery, but I saw one outside of the realty office.  That’s taking life and death into the complete cycle right in front of your face.  I realized at that moment how goth Italians are.  They know how to grieve by wearing black and covering mirrors after the death of a loved one.  I can respect that.  Why be afraid?

Most vampires are melting by now in this hot summer.  Only a few more months before the days shorten and the nights get longer.  Hide at the shopping mall for protection for now.  If you’re a real vampire, I feel sorry for you now that the craze had driven the papparazzi into your retreat.

Hearse Con 2009

Posted in Goth Culture on June 7, 2009 by Heidi

Had a dark day at the Hearse Con in Denver, Colorado.  Actually it was sunny and difficult to take pictures, which I have posted on my Facebook page.  The event is awesome with people from all over the country and Canada lining up their refurbished hearses.  Some are classic, some are kitschy.

It was unusual seeing goth people hanging in the sun.  Cheery people in black leather, studs and mohawks is odd to this Detroiter.   Last year the even was in April: rain, clouds, cold, and better goth weather.   The first weekend in June is always iffy, but this weekend proved to be nice for the bands and pin-up babes to entertain the crowds without the threat of nasty weather.   Keep this weekend in mind for Hearse Con 2010!

Holidays and Hearses

This Memorial Day is an excellent time to visit the cemetery.  Pay homage to those who have walked the path, the journey, the mind trip of life.  Veterans, grandparents, friends and pets are all in our memories.  Cemeteries are our history.

Hearse.con is coming up the weekend of June 5-6th.  Some hearse collectors drive from Manitoba, California and Iowa to attend this event.  If horror movies, Rob Zombie tunes and love for the old goth station wagon, then this is for you.  See you there!

30 Days of What are you Thinking?

Money.  What most people will sell their souls for.  I was shocked to find that David Slade, the director of 30 Days of Night would be taking on the teeny boppers at Twillight.    Slade’s vampire thriller set in Alaska was not an Academy winner, but it was a pretty good flick.   He does seem an obvious choice with the adaptation of 30 from the graphic novels, but ouch.  He’s ventured into a new world of romantic vampires, which is exactly why I thought he awas above all that rubbish by directing sick disgusting blood sucking eastern europeans in search of victims.  Maybe he’ll bring the teenage world into the reality of vampires, so finally, this trend will die.  Grossed out teenagers are hilarious when they find out what it really takes to be part of the dessired clique.  “Oh my gosh, that’s blood!”

Goth City

Posted in Goth Misc. on April 11, 2009 by Heidi

Having recently traveled back to my old party city Detroit, I was reminded how goth it really is.  Besides the fact that the streets were abandoned, the look and feel of the city was the perfect setting for some killer horror movies.  Night in Detroit read as a gothic novel where Jack the Ripper lurked and pounced on his victims.  This time, no victims.  Not enough people to provide zombies or vampires with a full day of  meals.

Bono’s gone bonkers

Posted in Goth Media on March 14, 2009 by Heidi

In this month’s cover of Roling Stone Magazine, either Bono is wearing guyliner or he just was barfed on by a messy raccoon.  Really, what happened to this Irish Icon?  Has the pains of society driven him to come crashing down into the twillight of his mind?  Bono, your not the hot vampyre guy.  Your music is so far from goth that bats fly away at the sound of the past five albums you’ve put out. Try fairy dust on for size.
